Principal

Steven Boyes read Geography at Lancaster University and went on to postgraduate research in Employment Law at Durham University, where he also completed a PGCE. He has been a director of the MPW Group since 1997. He is an inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate and is the Chairman of the Council for Independent Further Education.

Vice Principals

Sarah Alakija was educated at New Hall, Cambridge where she read Modern and Medieval Languages for Part 1 of her Tripos and Law for Part 2. Before joining MPW in 1997 as a Director of Studies, she taught French and Spanish to primary school children and worked as a press analyst for the 1997 General Election. She became Head of GCSE in 2001 and a Vice Principal in 2007.

Seán Buckley read English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford and subsequently completed his PhD in 19th Century Irish Literature at Birkbeck College, London. He taught in a number of independent schools before joining MPW in 2003.

John Medlicott read Biology at Nottingham University and obtained his PGCE at Exeter University. Before joining MPW he held senior positions at Highgate School, South Hampstead High School and most recently at Duff Miller College. He is a national teacher trainer and author.

Petrouchka Stafford read History and Politics at the University of the West of England and joined MPW in 2003 having previously worked for a management counsultancy. She was appointed Head of GCSE in 2007 and Vice Principal in 2009.

The Principal, Vice Principals and Directors of Studies are all Personal Tutors.

Registrar

Christine Gavin read Computer Science and Mathematics at Exeter University. Before joining MPW in 2001, she worked for a telecommunications firm and for the Office for National Statistics.

Directors of Studies

James Barton read Ancient History and Archaeology at Warwick University and subsequently gained an MA in Performance from the University of East Anglia. He worked as a professional actor and taught Drama in a number of schools before joining MPW in 2007.

James Burnett read Physics and Astrophysics at King’s College, London. He began his teaching career in 1982 and taught at Canford School in Dorset and Latymer Upper School in London. Before joining MPW he was Principal of Abbey Tutorial College (London) from 1991 to 1997.

Emilia Ippolito read English, Spanish and Italian Literature at the University La Sapienza in Rome. She subsequently moved to Germany, where she obtained a PhD in English, then to London, where she completed her PGCE. Prior to joining MPW she taught Modern Languages at university and secondary school levels in Germany, France and the UK. She is also an external assessor for MFL admissions at the Robert Schuman University in Strasbourg.

Michael McGrath read Modern British History at the London School of Economics, where he also completed a Masters degree and a PhD. Prior to joining MPW he taught in a number of London day schools, most recently as Deputy Head of Regent College, London.

Patrick Milton read Psychology at Royal Holloway, London. He has since worked with adults with autism as well as providing learning support in a specialist school for students with learning disabilities. Patrick joined MPW in 2009 as Learning Support Tutor, and was appointed as Head of Academic Support in 2010.

Paul Turner read Geography at Goldsmith's College, London and obtained his PGCE at the Institue of Education, where he also completed a PhD in Educational Leadership. Prior to joining MPW, he was Headmaster of schools in South Africa and Portugal before returning to the UK as a Housemaster at Dover College and then House Manager at Cambridge Centre for Sixth Form Studies.

Maya Waterstone read Theology at King's College, London. Before joining MPW in 2003, she taught at Montessori level for four years. She is a qualified adolescent therapeutic counsellor.

Bettina Weichert read Russian at Queen Mary College, London and subsequently gained an MSc in Russian and Post-Soviet Studies at the London School of Economics. Prior to joining MPW she was a teaching fellow at the University of Exeter, a journalist and producer for the BBC World Service and most recently a teacher of Modern Languages at Manchester Grammar School.
