Prize Winners 2008
Lauren Shipton won The MPW Outstanding Achievement Prize and was also awarded CIFE’s top prize for academic
excellence, the Richard Smart Gold Award. She joined MPW from The Lady Eleanor Holles School for our two-year A level
course in Geography, History, Biology and Chemistry. She achieved grades AAA at A level, including maximum marks in
all six Geography units, four History units and two Biology units, and an A grade in AS level Chemistry. Lauren was
also the recipient of the Royal Geographical Society Award for the best performance by an A level Geography candidate
in 2008. Lauren won a place to read Geography at Brasenose College, Oxford.
Victoria Umansky won The Denise Callahan Prize for the best performance in arts subjects. Victoria joined MPW from the
International School of Lausanne for a two-year A level course in Art, History of Art and Philosophy. She achieved
grades AAA and won a place to read Philosophy at King’s College, London.
Oriel Mahalla and Ngoc Thuy Tien Nguyen shared The Martin Dyson Prize for the best performance
in science subjects.
Oriel joined MPW from Immanuel School for our two-year A level course. She achieved grades AAA in Chemistry,
Mathematics and Physics at A level and also gained an A grade in AS level Biology. Oriel is now reading Chemistry at
University College, London. Ngoc joined MPW from Vietnam for our two-year A level course in Chemistry, Mathematics,
Further Mathematics and Physics. She gained grades AAAA, including Mathematics a year early, and won a place to read
Physics at Imperial College, London. She was also awarded CIFE’s Richard Smart Prize for Achievement in Science.
Rebecca Hall won The Winifred Durnford Prize for the best performance in A level Science and Social Science subjects.
Rebecca transferred to MPW from The London Oratory School, where she had achieved grades ABC in AS level Mathematics,
Economics and Critical Thinking. She took a one-year A level course in Mathematics, Economics and Religious Studies
and gained grades AAA, including maximum marks in three Economics units, three Religious Studies units and one
Mathematics unit. Rebecca won a place to read Economics and Mathematics at the University of Bristol.
Yu Zheng Qi won The Huw Thomas Prize for the best overall performance in A level Arts subjects. Yu Zheng joined
MPW from Ningbo Xiao Shi Middle School in China for our two-year A level course. She achieved grades AAA in Art,
Mathematics and Music at A level and also gained a grade A in AS level Media Studies. Yu Zheng won a place to read
Music at King’s College, London.
Francesca McSloy won The MPW Prize for the best performance by a short retake student. Francesca joined MPW from The
Cheltenham Ladies’ College, where she had achieved grades ABB in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. She embarked upon
intensive, one-term retake courses in Chemistry and Mathematics, gaining grades AA and winning a place to read
Neuroscience at King’s College, London.
Matthew Whitty won The MPW Prize for the best performance by an A level Arts retake student. Matthew joined MPW from
Broomsfield School, where he had achieved grades BBB in Geography, History and Sociology. He retook a selection of
units in all three subjects in January and June and additionally took a new A level course in Politics in one year.
Matthew achieved grades AAAA and won a place to read Politics at The University of Nottingham.
Eleanor Weir won The MPW Prize for the best performance by an A level Science retake student. Eleanor joined MPW from
Dr Challoner’s Grammar School, where she had achieved BCC in Biology, Chemistry and English. She retook Biology and
Chemistry on September to January courses and English over a year. Eleanor achieved grades AAA and won a place to read
Medicine at The University of Sheffield.
Charlotte Smart won The Sylvia Trott Prize for Languages. Charlotte transferred from Francis Holland School to MPW at
the end of Year 12. She achieved grades AAA in French, German and History of Art at A level and also gained an A* in
GCSE Russian and won a place to read German and Russian at Murray Edwards College, Cambridge.
Lei Ye won the MPW Prize for the best performance by a lower-sixth student. Lei joined MPW from China and achieved
grade A in A level Mathematics and grades AAA in AS level Accounting, Economics and Statistics, including maximum
marks in five Mathematics units and one Accounting unit. She has now gone on to A2 study in Economics, Further
Mathematics and Statistics and is applying to read Economics at university.
Kush Duncan and Daria Kireeva shared The Laura Freeman Prize for best performance at GCSE.
Kush took eight GCSE subjects over one year, achieving grades A*A*A*A*AAB. He was also awarded the CIFE GCSE Prize
for Outstanding Performance. Daria took ten GCSEs over two years, achieving grades A*A*A*AAAAAAA.
Ni Ding won the MPW Art Prize. Ni joined MPW from the Beijing No. 8 High School in China for our one-year A level
course in Art, Photography, Textiles and Chinese, gaining grades AAAA and winning a place on a Foundation course at
Central St Martin’s.
Each year the examination boards award special commendations for the top ten results in the entire national entry.
In 2008, in addition to the commendation awarded to Lauren Shipton, two other MPW students, Emily Chan
and Belen Julia Travers, also won such commendations from Edexcel.
