Prize Winners 2003

The Martin Dyson Prize for the best improvement in A level Science subjects was shared by Sarah Jane Douglas and Wing Man.

Sarah Jane Douglas joined MPW in September 2002 from Epsom College, where she had achieved ACC in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. She took one-term January retake courses in Chemistry and Physics and achieved AA, winning a place to read Medicine at the University of Sheffield.

Wing Man joined MPW in September 2002 from Farnham Sixth Form College, where he had achieved ACC in Information Technology, Biology and Chemistry. He took one-term January retake courses in Biology and Chemistry and achieved AA, winning a place to read Medicine at the University of Liverpool.

The MPW Prize for the best improvement in A Level Arts subjects went to Fiona Hampton.

Fiona Hampton joined MPW in September 2002 from Lady Margaret School, where she had achieved grades BCC in Art, English Literature and French. She took the one-term January retake course in English, a one-year retake course in Art and followed first time courses in A level History of Art and AS Theatre Studies - also over one year. She gained grades AAAA and won a place to read Film and Literature at the University of Warwick.

The Winifred Durnford Prize for the best performance by a first-time A level student in Science subjects went to Claire McEvoy.

Claire McEvoy joined MPW in January 2003. She took January to June courses in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Politics, achieving grades AAA, attaining maximum marks in three Mathematics units and two Politics units. Claire won a place to read Politics, Psychology and Sociology at Bristol University.

The Denise Callahan Prize for the best performance by a first-time A level student in Arts subjects was shared by Nina Bell and Tallulah Sheffield.

Nina Bell joined MPW in September 2001 to take one-year GCSE courses, achieving A grades in eight subjects. She went on to complete one-year A level courses in Geography, History and Religious Studies, achieving AAA, attaining maximum marks in three Geography units, one History unit and one Religious Studies unit. Nina won a place at Columbia University to read General Arts.

Tallulah Sheffield joined MPW in September 2001 from Heathfield School. She took two-year A level courses in English, Photography and Religious Studies, achieving grades AAA. She also gained a B grade in AS level Philosophy. Tallulah went on to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Art, in New York.

The MPW Prize for the best overall performance in A level Science and Social Science subjects went to David Kim.

David Kim joined MPW in September 2002 from Wilson’s School, where he had achieved grades CC at A level in Economics and Mathematics and grades BD at AS level in Business Studies and Music. He followed one-year retake A level courses in Business Studies, Economics and Mathematics and also took up Politics as a new A level subject. He achieved grades AAAA and won a place to read Management at University College (University of London).

The Huw Thomas Prize for the best overall performance in A level Arts subjects was shared by Maria Mursell and Anthea Kamalnath.

Maria Mursell joined MPW in September 2001 from Alleyn’s School. She took two-year A level courses in Art, English, History of Art and Sociology, achieving grades AAAA. Maria took a gap year and then went on to read Politics and Development Studies at the University of Sussex.

Anthea Kamalnath joined MPW in September 2002 from Choate Rosemary Hall, Connecticut. At MPW she took one-year courses in A level English, History of Art and Religious Studies and AS Classical Civilisation, achieving AAAA and won a place to read Archaeology and Anthropology at Newnham College, Cambridge.

The MPW Prize for the best performance by a lower-sixth student went to Tran Ha Phuong.

Tran Ha Phuong joined MPW in September 2002 from her native Vietnam. In her lower-sixth year,she achieved straight AAA grades not only for AS Art, English and Psychology but also for a full A level in Russian, attaining maximum marks in five out of the six units taken.

The MPW prize for the best performance by a GCSE student went to Storm Huntley.

Storm joined MPW in September 2002 from Gordonstoun School and took one-year GCSE courses. She achieved grades A*A*A* in Chemistry, English Literature and Mathematics, grades AAAAA in Biology, English, French, Geography and Physics and grade B in Drama. Storm went on to take AS courses at Basil Paterson College in Edinburgh.

The MPW Art Prize went to Caroline Mackenzie.

The art prize is awarded to the student whose work, in the opinion of twenty judges at the annual art show, has demonstrated exceptional creativity and sensitivity. Caroline joined MPW in September 2001 from St David's School in Ashford. She gained grades AAC in A level Art, Photography and History of Art. She went on to study on an art foundation course at Kingston.

The MPW Outstanding Achievement Award went to Amy Wevill.

Amy Wevill joined MPW in September 2001 from Devonport High School for Girls. She took two-year A level courses in History of Art, Mathematics, Photography and Physics, achieving grades AAAA. Amy took a gap year before going on to read Art History at University College London.
