Prize Winners 2002
Nish Sivaganasundaram and Kay Moon shared The Martin Dyson Prize for the best improvement in A level Science subjects.
Nish joined MPW in September 2001 from Eltham College, where he
had achieved A level grades of BCD in Biology, Chemistry and
Mathematics. He took the one-term January retake course in Biology and
Chemistry, achieving grades AA, and the one-year course in Mathematics,
achieving a third grade A and won a place to read Medicine at Newcastle
University.
Kay joined MPW in September 2001 from Nonsuch High School in
order to retake A levels in Physics and Chemistry and AS level Further
Mathematics, where her previous grades had been BCD respectively. She
took the one-term January retake course, improving to grades AAA and
winning a place to read Mechanical Engineering at St Catherine’s
College, Oxford.
Alexandra Albert won The MPW Prize for the
best improvement in A Level Arts subjects. Alexandra joined MPW in
September 2001 from St Mary’s Ascot, where she had achieved A level
grades of ABC in French, History and English respectively. She retook
English and History on the one-term January retake course, improving to
grades AA, and won a place to read Modern Languages at Oriel College,
Oxford.
Serena Atkins and Caroline Pardy shared The Winifred Durnford Prize for the best performance by a first-time A level student in Science subjects.
Serena joined MPW in September 2001 from St Paul’s Girls’
School, where she had already achieved A level grades of AAB in
Chemistry, Latin and Mathematics respectively. She followed a one-term
course in Mathematics to improve that to a grade A, but also
followed first-time courses in two new subjects, Biology and Physics,
gaining two further A grades from scratch in one year. This enabled
her to gain a place to read Veterinary Science at Cambridge.
Caroline joined MPW in September 2001 from Godolphin and
Latymer School in order to complete her A level courses in Biology,
Chemistry and English Literature. She achieved grades AAA and won a
place at Imperial College to read Medicine.
Alexia Zographos won The Denise Callahan
Prize for the best performance by a first-time A level student in Arts
subjects. Alexia joined MPW in November 2000. She took five AS levels
in Biology, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and History, achieving
grades AAAAB, including maximum marks in seven units. She went on to
complete A level courses in Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology,
achieving grades AAA, attaining maximum marks in two Psychology units
and one Sociology unit. Alexia went on to read Psychology at University
College London.
Katie Jackson won The Huw Thomas Prize for
the best overall performance in A level Arts subjects. Katie joined MPW
in September 2000 from Godolphin and Latymer School. She followed the
two-year A level course in Classical Civilisation, English and
Philosophy, achieving grades AAA. She also gained an A grade in AS
level Biology. After completing a gap year, she went on to read English at Edinburgh University.
Dodi Najman won The MPW prize for the most
outstanding achievement across all A level subjects. Dodi joined MPW in
September 2000 to follow the two-year A level course in Biology,
Chemistry and Geography, achieving grades AAA. She also gained an A
grade in AS in AS level French. She attained maximum marks in nine of
the AS and A2 units that she sat over her two years at MPW. She went on to read
Veterinary Science at the Royal Veterinary College.
Gabriele Pla and Sofia Pla
shared The MPW Prize for the best performance by a lower-sixth student.
Gabriela and Sofia joined MPW in September 2000 from their native
Argentina. They followed one-year GCSE courses before embarking on a
two-year A level course in English, History and Mathematics, and
simultaneously a one-year course in the full A level in French and
Spanish. They each achieved straight A grades at the end of the lower
sixth, not only in all the AS exams but also in the full A level
Language exams that they were taking a year early. They continued into
the upper-sixth to complete their A levels in English and History.
Gabriela also added AS level Art History to her curriculum, while
Sofia continued her A level in Maths. Both went on to Buenos Aires University to study arts-based degree courses.
William Wyld won The MPW Art Prize. William
joined MPW in September 1999 from Westminster School to complete the
second year of his GCSE courses. His eight pass grades in 2000 included
an A in Art, English Language, English Literature and Latin. He then
went on to follow A level courses in Art, English and Philosophy,
achieving grades ABB. He was also awarded a grade A in AS Drama and
Theatre Studies. William continued onto a Gap Year before university.
Chloe Cangardel won The MPW prize for the
best performance by a GCSE student. Chloe joined MPW in September 2001
and took one-year GCSE courses. She achieved grades A* A* A* in English
Language, French and Geography, grades AAAA in Biology, English
Literature History and Mathematics and grade B in Chemistry. Chloe later completed
A Level courses at MPW in English, Philosophy
and Politics and went on to read European Studies at King's College, London.
