Prize Winners 2001

Daisy Hamilton-Baillie won The Martin Dyson Prize for the best improvement in A level Science subjects. Daisy joined MPW in September 2000 from Tudor Hall School, where she obtained grades BBC in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. She retook Biology and Chemistry from September to January, achieving grades AA, and Physics from January to June, again achieving grade A. She went on to read Medicine at the University of Leeds.

Gillian Thomas and Line Holm shared The Winifred Durnford Prize for the best performance in first-time A level Science subjects. Gillian joined MPW in May 2000, having started A level courses at Kingsway College. She took A levels in Biology, Chemistry and English, achieving grades AAA, and went on to study Politics at the University of Bristol. Line joined MPW in September 2000 as a mature student having graduated in Philosophy from the London School of Economics. She took one-year self-contained courses in Chemistry and Biology, achieving grades AA, and went on to read Veterinary Science at the University of Bristol.

Lois Allison won The Denise Callahan Prize for the best performance in first-time A level Arts subjects. Lois joined MPW in September 1999 from Newstead Wood School. She took Politics over one year and Art History and English A levels over two years, gaining grades AAA and a commendation in Art History for achieving one of the top five results in the country. She went on to read Art History at St John’s College, Cambridge.

Vladeta Karatosic and Sabrina Bashir shared The MPW Prize for the best overall performance in A level Science and Social Science subjects. Vladeta joined MPW in September 1999 and took two-year A level courses in Economics, History and Mathematics. He achieved grades AAA and won a place at University College, London to read Economics. Sabrina joined MPW in January 2000 to take A levels in Accounting, Economics, Pure Mathematics and Statistics over 18 months. She achieved grades AAAA and went on to read Economics at the London School of Economics.

Sarah Rodger and Jessica Bonham shared The Huw Thomas Prize for the best overall performance in A level Arts subjects. Sarah joined MPW in September 1999 from Surrey College. In her lower sixth she took one-year A level courses in History and Politics, achieving grades AA, and in her upper sixth took a further two one-year A level courses in Photography and Psychology, also achieving grades AA. Sarah won a place reading Social and Political Sciences at King’s College, Cambridge. Jessica joined MPW in September 1999 having taken her GCSEs at Bryanston School. She took two-year A level courses in Art, History of Art, Photography and English, obtaining grades AAAB. She went on to take a gap year with the intention of applying to take a Foundation Course at Art school.

Alexia Zographos and Dodi Najman shared The MPW Prize for the best performance by a lower-sixth student. Alexia joined MPW in November 2000 from Collingham. She took AS levels in Biology, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and History, achieving grades AAAAB. She attained maximum marks in two Philosophy units, two Sociology units and in all three Psychology units. Alexia went on to complete A level courses in Biology, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology and won a place to study Psychology at University College London. Dodi joined MPW in September 2000 from Kingston College. She took AS levels in Chemistry, Biology, Geography and French and achieved grades AAAB. She gained maximum marks for all of her Geography papers. Dodi went on to complete A level courses in Chemistry, Biology, Geography and French and won a place to read Veterinary Science at the Royal Veterinary College.

Joonwoo Lee won The MPW Prize for the best performance by a GCSE student. Joonwoo joined MPW in September 2000 and took one-year GCSE courses. He achieved grades A*A* in History and Mathematics, grades AAAAA in Chemistry, English Literature, French, Information Studies and Physics and grade B in English Language. Joonwoo joined the sixth form of King’s College School, Wimbledon.

Pippa Goodwin Self won The MPW Art Prize. Pippa joined MPW from Westonbirt School in September 2000 to complete her A levels in Art, Art History, Business Studies and English, achieving grades AABC respectively. Pippa went on to study Art History at the Courtauld Institute of Art.

Each year the examination boards award special commendations for the top three or top five results in the entire national entry. In 2001, in addition to the commendation awarded to Lois Allison, two other MPW students, Alex Babington and Amelia Roberts, won such commendations from AQA for achieving one of the top five results in A level History of Art.
