Paula Gregory (19)Previous school: Kent College Paula undertook Easter revision courses at MPW Cambridge last year (2006). In January she had taken an A2 unit in both Biology and Chemistry, as well as retaking an AS Biology unit. She did not get good grades in her A2 units – E grades in both – and she did not improve her mark in her AS Biology unit. She knew the grades she needed to get into university to study Dentistry were AAB, and the As had to be in Chemistry and Biology. Paula asked her teachers what she could do to improve her grades and revision techniques and they recommended MPW. Paula says: "We studied past papers with the tutor which helped me to understand what the examiner is looking for in an answer. In the Biology revision course we were told how to write the essay, what to include, how much depth to go into and we went over parts of the course that I was finding particularly difficult." "The results were that my E in the A2 Chemistry unit went up to a B, the E in the A2 Biology unit went up to an A and the C in AS Biology went up to an A. My overall grades were ABB: A in Maths and Bs in Chemistry and Biology. My first choice university was Sheffield. They rejected me but I was accepted by my second choice, Manchester, where I am now studying Dentistry." "My advice to other students is that it is worth doing all the hard work at A level to get into university. Do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Do lots of past papers, start revising early so by the time the exams come it will be easier to recall the information you need and you will understand it better." MPW is the UK's largest and best-known independent group of tutorial colleges with centres in London, Birmingham and Cambridge. It offers full-time A level and GCSE courses as well as Easter revision courses. The majority of MPW's students gain places at the top universities. In 2005 over 60% of its students were admitted to medical schools or universities ranked in The Times top twenty. For more information contact:
