2009 Prize Winners
Meera Patel won the MPW prize for the best performance by a two-year A level student.
Meera joined MPW from Wolverhampton Girls’ High School to follow a two-year A level programme in Biology, Chemistry
and Mathematics. She gained grades AAA and won a place to read Biological Sciences at the University of Leicester.
Darshane Theara won the MPW prize for the best performance by a one-year A level student.
Darshane joined MPW from Lawrence Sheriff School, where he had achieved grades BCD in A level English
Literature, Mathematics and Biology. At MPW he took one-year A level retake courses, achieving grades ABB and
winning a place to read Physiotherapy at Keele University.
Trishika Patel and Verinda Singh Sanghera shared the prize for the best performance by a lower
sixth student.
Trishika joined MPW from Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls to follow a two-year A level programme.
At the end of the lower sixth year she achieved AABB in Mathematics, Psychology, Biology and Chemistry. Trishika
has now gone on to A2 level study in all four subjects and is applying to read Medicine at university.
Verinda joined MPW from Queen Mary’s Grammar School, where he had achieved grades ACDD at AS level in
Geography, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. He chose to restart his AS courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics,
achieving grades AAA. Verinda has now gone on to A2 study in these subjects and is applying to read Medicine at
university.
Munveer Kaur Lyall won the Nikul Patel Memorial Prize for Mathematics.
Munveer joined MPW from King Edward VI Handsworth School to follow a two-year A level programme.
She achieved grades AAA in Biology Chemistry and Mathematics and also gained an A grade in AS level Economics.
Munveer won a place to read Mathematics at the University of Birmingham.
Sebastian Horne won the MPW prize for the best performance by a student going on to study Medicine.
Sebastian joined MPW in September 2008 from King Edward VI School, Stratford, where he had achieved
grades BCDC in Biology, Chemistry, Music and General Studies. He retook Biology and Chemistry, gaining grades AA
in January and June respectively and winning a place to read Medicine at Hull York Medical School.
Sachin Basandrai won the MPW prize for the best performance by a student going on to study Dentistry.
Sachin joined MPW from King Edward’s School, where he had achieved grades AAB in A level Chemistry,
Mathematics and Economics and also gained a grade A in AS level Spanish. He took A2 Spanish and A level Biology
from scratch over a year, achieving grades AA and winning a place to read Dentistry at Aston University.
Michael Dyer won the MPW prize for individual achievement.
Michael joined MPW from Solihull School to follow a two-year A level programme. He achieved grades BBB in
Government and Politics, History and Law and a B grade in AS level Film Studies. Michael won a place to read Law
with Management at Aston University.
